Flanged Bowl with
Domed Cover
The bowl was made much earlier that the
cover, probably in the 3rd century AD, and is the oldest piece in the hoard.
It has an incised leafy pattern to the flange, originally inlaid with
niello, whilst the inside has an incised decoration of eight radiating leaves.
The
domed cover was made in the 4th century AD, probably to fit the bowl.
It has a frieze of Bacchic ornament in the form of human heads and
animals. The upper part bears a
leaf design. The handle is a
statuette of a young triton (one of a race
of minor sea gods, half man, half fish )
blowing a conch shell; this
may not have been part of the original design
